This is the first of a series showing examples of dance styles from Tap to Salsa to freeForm.
We start with:
BODY POPPING
Made infamous by Michael Jackson and his 'Moonwwalk', many people still look at 'bodypopping' as a juvenile, 'wrong side of the streets' dance style best to be avaided.
That would be wrong and unfair for artists from the 1930's Louis Jordan (is you is or is you aint my baby) to James Brown to Prince have all incorporated some of these moves into routines that can be found fresh and mesmeric to this day.
For those football fans (UK) amongst you, Peter Crouch and his rather bizarre 'robot' celebration is taken from a form of Body popping.
Having its roots in the late 1970s funk music era, it originated in California.
Oft confused with Breakdancing, it is as with many American founded musical ideals a matter of location, Breakdancing originating in New York.
Below is a video of Poppin John giving an excellent example of this dance form that the writer of this piece once partook of whilst learning.............to Tap dance!
To view this video please pause the movie until the red line is at least half way along the bar
Poppin John danced in Paris in 2008.
