When did you first realise you were an artist?
Probably between the ages of 10-12yrs.
What’s your earliest memory of making art?
I’ve always been creating; I can’t remember a time that I didn’t.
Would you describe for us your work?
Although I’ve worked as an artist and sculptor for most of my life, I’m now a poet primarily (which is what I really consider myself to be) and my readers have described my work as ‘thought provoking’, which I try to be.
Who has influenced your work?
Stephen Morris, Roger McGough, Dylan, Cohen, Bolan…the list goes on.
How do you keep motivated if times get tough in your practice?
Ah…I set myself tasks and goals to reach and I always insist on finishing things, good or bad.
How do you manage the business side of being an artist?
With difficulty… I teach and lead workshops and I am continually in a mode of self promotion.
What are you working on at the moment?
A number of things, but primarily a mini epic poem about city culture, inspired by the economic crash….
Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?
I’d like to considered as a respected poet.
What other interests do you have outside of art?
I’m a local Town Councillor
What would you be if you were not an artist?
Probably a shop keeper of some sort.
How do you structure your day?
Generally around my family and whatever is inspiring me at the time.
Have you had any unusual experiences during your career as an artist?
Many, I worked in the entertainment industry for many years so I have worked with many famous personalities.
If you could paint anywhere in the world, where would it be?
I’ll read that as ‘write’… I genuinely love the south of France, and of course Venice. Closer to home, Snowdonia.
Are you currently making your living from being an artist?
In one way and another.
Is exhibiting a motivating factor to you?
I have recently begun to use my poetry as inspiration for artwork, so yes I am woking towards an exhibition. I also consider recitals as the equivalent of exhibitions, and yes they do.
What advice would you give to a new artist setting out on their career?
Be open minded and always be prepared to learn from others, yet still believe in yourself!
Did your family encourage your creativity?
To a degree, but not as a career
Do you work in a studio every day?
Yes
Do you work on multiple pieces at a time?
Yes, I have to.
